Human Rights Issues in Middle East - Focus on Egypt

Asmaa Mahfouz, a young woman in Cairo, is one of the featured guests on this week's Radio Intifada. She was among the April 6th team of young people who orchestrated the first ever nationwide strike in Egypt via FACE Book. As a political activist she is very familiar with the HR issues in Egypt.

Also joining us is Mr. Omar Afifi who recently was given political asylum here in the US because of his HR activism in Egypt. A former policeman of 20 years turned HR attorney, Mr. Afifi wrote a book which spelled out the rights of ordinary citizens in regard to police search and seizure, harassment, etc. He wrote it in simple street dialect (Arabic) for the masses. In the first ten days over 50,000 copies were sold on the streets of Cairo and it was eventually uploaded to over 10,000 websites. Needless to say the GOE did not like this.  Mr. Afifi fled Egypt after three attempts were made on his life.

Mr. Afifi and Ms. Mahfouz will be speaking about their personal experiences and HR activism.

A spokesperson from Human Rights Watch Middle East division will give a broader overview of HR issues in Egypt and the ME; the work of HRW in the region and the future implications of the Obama election for HR in the region.

Hosted and Produced by Nile ElWardandi, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective of KPFK.
