IRAN: More than an Election

The demonstrations following the Iranian election were more than a reaction to the election and not simply a showing of support for Mousavi. Like the demonstrations that toppled the Shah in 1979, they included a broad cross section of Iranians throughout the country and were an outgrowth of the evolving development of civil society.

In this week’s Radio Intifada, we will explore both the background of the demonstrations and the long term impact of this most recent resistance to the regime. We will also discuss what Reese Erlich has dubbed the “confusion of the left” over the events in Iran.

After a brief update on Gaza, we will be joined by Norma Clare Moruzzi and Ami Motevalli:

Norma Claire Moruzzi, co-author of an analysis of the current/ongoing situation in Iran, is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Gender and Women’s Studies and Director of the International Studies Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Amitis Motevalli is a long time radical activist, art educator and multimedia visual artist. She was in Iran at the start of the recent demonstrations and has been speaking widely about her own experiences there and the dilemma of leftists.

Co-produced and co-hosted by Sherna Berger Gluck and Hamoud Salhi, SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) Collective of KPFK/Pacifica
