Description: Treat Yourself This Holiday Season to…. The Shape of Water, at the magnificent Art Theater in Long Beach!!! From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg. “A dark-edged fairy tale as lovingly steeped in vintage movie magic as it is in hypnotic water imagery, this captivating creature feature marries a portrait of morally corrupt early-1960s America with an outsider tale of love and friendship ” – Hollywood Reporter.  “A ravishing, eccentric auteur’s imagining, spilling artistry, empathy and sensuality from every open pore, it also offers more straight-up movie for your money than just about any Hollywood studio offering this year.” – Variety.  “The Shape of Water” is partly a code-scrambled fairy tale, partly a genetically modified monster movie, and altogether wonderful.” – New York Times,  "Magical, thrilling and romantic to the core, a sensual and fantastical fairy tale with moral overtones, it's a film that plays by all the rules and none of them, going its own way with fierce abandon." – Los Angeles Times

Description: Jesus Christ Superstar Fans, Rejoice!  Ted Neeley is coming to The Frida Cinema! Actor/singer/musician Ted Neeley will be joining Frida audiences for three screenings of the Webber/Rice Spectacular on December 16th and 17th.  Come early and meet the man who, 44 years after this film’s release, is still touring the world with the stage production of Jesus Christ Superstar , performing the role that made him a rock icon.  Celebrated as arguably the best rock opera ever written, 1973 classic Jesus Christ Superstar is based on a concept album project written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, and the subsequent long-running Broadway performance that followed.  Starring Ted Neeley in his iconic role as Jesus Christ, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, and the late greats Carl Anderson and Barry Dennen as Judas Iscariot and Pontius Pilate, this sensational feature film tells the story of the final six days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of his exasperated friend Judas Iscariot, who feels that Christ and his fellow apostles may have lost sight of their core mission at hand.  Too often mis-labeled a musical, Jesus Christ Superstar is very much the definition of a rock opera, featuring an explosive set of songs that range in style from stage to disco to funk to rock, carrying the narrative completely in song, with no spoken lines.

Description: The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana presents Legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike’s 100th film,  the violent and strikingly beautiful BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL. Based on the Manga series “Mugen no jûnin” by Hiroaki Samura, Blade of the Immortal follows the deeds of Manji, a skilled samurai who has a decisive advantage: no wound can kill him.  He has taken a lot of lives, both innocent and guilty, and now lives life in feudal Japan as a criminal after being cursed with his immortality. His only possible salvation? He must honor his vow to kill enough evil men – 1,000, to be exact – before his curse is lifted and he can finally rest. When he comes across a young girl named Rin whose parents were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu, Manji makes an oath to help her avenge their deaths, leading the unlikely duo on a remarkable quest to make right against those who did them wrong. A kinetic and visually stunning ballet of violence, BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL combines fantastical and knowingly cartoonish elements with rich characterization, invested performances, and genuinely intense and gory battles, delivering a film that truly honors its page-tuner Manga roots while reveling in the sort of visual audacity and spectacle that only the art of cinema can offer. “Not often do you encounter a movie about slicing, dicing samurai vivisecting each other into gory chunks that is also a thing of beauty.” – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune “Further proof that of all the genres he dabbles in, samurai cinema is the one that brings out the grandest entertainer in Miike. Here’s to 100 more.” – A.A. Dowd, The AV Club  “Blade of the Immortal is flat-out gorgeous.” – Gary Thompson, Philadelphia Inquirer  “Here’s to another 100!” – James Berardinelli, ReelViews

Description: The First Entirely Oil-Painted Feature Film, Comes to The Frida November 24th – 30th.  Already the winner of four international awards, Loving Vincent takes a revolutionary approach in relating the last days of famed artist Vincent Van Gogh, as each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, created in the same technique as Van Gogh by a team of 115 painters.  A true first-of-its-kind film that mesmerizes from start to finish, Loving Vincent explores the life and unusual death of Van Gogh via depictions of his artworks, and seen through the eyes of a young man who arrives in the painter’s hometown to deliver the troubled artist’s final letter, and who ends up investigating his final days there.  “One of the most lunatic labors of love to appear on movie screens this year. And in that sense, a fitting, miraculous tribute to its subject.” – Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly.  “An engrossing exploration of the artist’s final days rendered in his signature painting style.” – Serena Donadoni, Village Voice. “Loving Vincent is almost too beautiful for its own good; I found myself, too often, so dazzled by the form that I quite forgot about the content.” – Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times. “Brings a poetic sense of tragedy to the last act of van Gogh’s life, and fresh insight into the kind of man he was.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

Description: Two Unanimously Acclaimed Films At One of the Most Beautiful Theaters: JANE and LADY BIRD at the ART THEATER in LONG BEACH!!!!
JANE—Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage that has been tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of JANE, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall — a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists.  “JANE is an epic romance filled with hope and brimming with a love for life and all of its ups and downs.” – LA Weekly.  “Few films this year offer up such lush and formal components. Morgen has made a film of deep emotional beauty. Required viewing for anyone seeking a classic in the making” – IndieWire.  “It’s a revelation!” – Vanity Fair
LADY BIRD--In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, amidst a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. “Gerwig the actress skillfully pivots between the wacky and the poignant, so it’s no surprise that Gerwig the auteur so delicately balances hilarity and heartbreak.” – TheWrap.   “It’s funny, lively, and then devastating when it needs to be, made with the kind of confidence even its heroine could only dream of.” – The Atlantic.  “Lady Bird is both generous and joyous, but when it stings, it stings deep..” – TIME Magazine

Description: Beauty Comes to Life in a Crescendo Through the Brushwork and Enduring Genius of One of the Most Talented Artists the World Has Ever Known. Raphael is the first film adaptation of the life and work of one of the most famous artists in the world - Raphael Sanzio. Few figures in the history of art have lived a life so full of intensity and fascination quite like Raphael Sanzio. He died aged just 37 and yet managed to leave an indelible mark on art. In a well-balanced dialogue between historical reconstructions and artistic commentary, the film retraces the most significant moments of Raphael’s life. Expert contributions delivered with feeling by great art historians Antonio Paolucci, Vincenzo Farinella and Antonio Natali, enrich the story of the life and work of the artist. The film is set in 20 locations, two of which are major exclusives, the Vatican Logge and Cardinal Bibbiena’s apartment in the Apostolic Palace, and shows over 30 works of art, among the most famous and most representative of Raphael’s entire work. This is a project developed by the creators of “Florence and the Uffizi Gallery in 3D” and “The Vatican Museums in 3D”, supported by contributions from some of the best creative talents from the Italian film industry, such as production designer Francesco Frigeri and costume designer Maurizio Millenotti. Playing the part of Raphael is actor Flavio Parenti, with Enrico Lo Verso in the role of Giovanni Santi, Angela Curri as Fornarina and Marco Cocci as Pietro Bembo.

Description: THE CHALLENGE, A Stylistically Brilliant, Fascinating Insight Into the High-Class, Blinged-Out Culture of Arabian Falconers. Italian visual artist Yuri Ancarani’s exquisite documentary enters the surreal world of wealthy Qatari sheikhs with a passion for amateur falconry. The opulence of this Middle Eastern gas state is on full display as the men race SUVs up and down sand dunes, fly their prized falcons around on private jets, and take their pet cheetahs out for desert spins in their souped-up Ferraris.
The result is a film jaw-dropping not only for its displays of wealth, but for the pure cinematic beauty that won Ancarani the Filmmaker of the Present award at the 2016 Locarno Film Festival.  "Ravishing. Despite all the feathery swooping and gunning motors, the flashing gold and pounding sun, these immaculately framed, balanced and photographed images have a tableaulike quality, characterized by a stillness (perhaps cultural or situational) that suggests a memento mori." – Manohla Dargis, The New York Times. "There’s an exquisite visual luxury at play in this loose trip across the Arabian gulf to a falconry competition in Qatar." – Fionnuala Halligan, Screen Daily. "This is, needless to say, an original film. It is also wildly delightful." – Calum Marsh, Village Voice. “Exuberant. Contemporary tropes of material luxury and ancient rituals coexist throughout Yuri Ancarani’s documentary.” – Diego Semerene, Slant

Description: Another Increible Laemmle Theater Culture Vulture Presentation:  Bones of Contention. BONES OF CONTENTION is the first nonfiction feature film to explore the theme of historical memory in Spain, focusing on the repression of lesbians and gays under Franquismo. Lining the roads of Spain, masked by miles and miles of pine trees, are unmarked graves in which over a hundred twenty thousand victims of the Franco regime are buried. Today the families of the desaparecidos lead a grassroots effort to uncover and identify the bones of their loved ones, despite opposition from the Spanish government. Invisible to the eye but hyper-visible in the mind, these mass graves of Spain's missing persons are an apt metaphor for the historical memory conundrum. How does a country excavate a past that is actively suppressed? The film weaves together two strands, the historical memory movement's campaign to uncover the past, and the search for the hidden lives of lesbians and gays under Franco. These strands are connected through the figure of Spain's most famous poet, Federico Garcia Lorca, who was killed by a right-wing firing squad in the first few weeks of the Spanish Civil War. The mystery of his missing remains and the debates over their significance provide the narrative spine of the documentary, as he has become the symbol today for both the historical memory movement and the LGBT movement. The film features interviews with: Laura Garcia Lorca, President, Garcia Lorca Foundation; Emilio Silva, Founder, Asociacion para la Recuperacion de la Memoria Historica; Antoni Ruiz and Silvia Reyes, imprisoned by the Franco regime due to their sexuality; Isabel Franc and Empar Pineda, lesbian witnesses and activists; Fernando Valverde, poet and Lorca scholar
"This chilling documentary revisits the fate of the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, executed in 1936, and of others who are known only to their families."—Screen International
"Andrea Weiss' sensitive film gives a voice to the victims from the LGBTIQ community ... Impressive archive material documents this repressed history which finds a painful echo in Lorca's poetry and music."—SydneysBuzz

The film also offers the chance to step inside two official royal residences - Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – to learn more about the artist, and Joseph Smith, the man who introduced Canaletto to Britain. Cinemagoers will embark on their very own 21st century Grand Tour, visiting the sites enjoyed by their 18th century counterparts and immortalized in Canaletto’s views - from the Rialto Bridge to the Piazza San Marco, and the Palazzo Ducale to the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Conrad kidnaps Medora when Lankedem decides to sell her to the Pasha.  Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem and reworked by Alexei Ratmansky from Petipa’s exotic 19th-century classic, this miracle of the repertoire is one of the Bolshoi’s most lavish productions. Complete with a magnificent awe-inspiring shipwreck and dramatic scenery, this grand romance allows enough dancing for nearly the entire company and is made especially for those who seek miracles in theatre.

Description:  The Exciting Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) Is Coming to Los Angeles, Bringing the Best of Spanish and Portuguese Films to the Heart of Hollywood!!! FICG in LA is a window into the world of contemporary Mexican and Ibero-American cinema and it is an extension of the Guadalajara Film Festival.  This year′s FICG in LA will take place in the historic TCL Chinese Theaters, right in the heart of the worldwide film and entertainment industry.  The festival is designed for people to come and explore the diverse regional narratives of Mexican and Ibero-America cinema, and to help critically acclaimed films from these regions reach a wider audience.  Los Angeles provides an essential backdrop for the showcase to take place because of its strong cultural ties to Latin American communities all across the globe. In addition to film screenings followed by Q&A sessions with filmmakers and talent, galas and special recognition awards to some key Latino and US Latino talent, FICG in LA is hosting again its industry initiatives this year. Wanting to contribute to the completion of Latino and Ibero-American films, FICG in LA is hosting for the second time its work-in-progress competition: WIP Latino for filmmakers seeking postproduction funds. Fiction and documentary projects that are currently in postproduction, made by either Latino or Ibero-American directors living in North America (USA or Canada), or by American and Canadian directors who have a film with Latino or Latin American content will be chosen to screen for a jury, sponsors and film industry professionals. WIP Latino will take place on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017. To reaffirm the social mission of FICG and the University of Guadalajara Foundation in USA, FICG in LA will donate again all of its proceeds to a charitable cause. Description: Another Fabulous Culture Vulture Event from the Amazing Laemmle Theaters--Titus Andronicus, Live from Stratford-Upon-Avon!!! When a society is oppressed, it becomes violent. How do we govern ourselves? In the chaos and disorder of 2017, Titus Andronicus is a commentary on the way this world could be going. Titus has returned from a brutal 10-year war having lost 21 sons in battle. Betrayed by his nation, and with his family in pieces, a series of bloody events follows as he and Tamora, Queen of the Goths begin a violent cycle of revenge. Rape, cannibalism, mutilation and murder are the gruesome tools in Shakespeare’s bloodiest play (the performance of Titus Andronicus has been issued an As Live 15 rating by the British Board of Film Classification for violent scenes.) Blanche McIntyre (The Two Noble Kinsmen, 2016) directs David Troughton in this chillingly contemporary Titus Andronicus. “A terrific cast give a masterclass in power and paranoia in a tremendous modern-day revival of Shakespeare’s tale of revenge.” --Michael Billington, Guardian

Description: A Chance to Meet One of the Most Important Civil Rights Activists in American History!!!  On Saturday, November 4th at 5:30pm, The Frida Cinema is proud to welcome Dolores Huerta, to discuss her new documentary about her life and work, Dolores.  Director Peter Bratt’s Dolores is an insightful and lively monument to the life of Dolores Huerta, a name that has been celebrated for decades among those who are familiar with her groundbreaking contributions to human rights, yet sadly unrecognized at large.  An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers union – National Farmworkers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW) – with Cesar Chavez, Huerta tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, Dolores reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change – and at 87 years old, she still commits herself to this mission today. Bratt’s documentary finally shines an overdue and worthy light on one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century, a champion who embodied the iconic motto she coined,“Sí se puede,” by soldering on despite twenty-two arrests and a notorious and brutal 1988 attack by San Francisco police officers that led to the emergency removal of her spleen and several broken ribs.  Today, among the various boards she serves on, Huerta is president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation, which she founded in 2002, a 501(c)(3) “community benefit organization that organizes at the grassroots level, engaging and developing natural leaders. DHF creates leadership opportunities for community organizing, leadership development, civic engagement, and policy advocacy in the following priority areas: health & environment, education & youth development, and economic development.”  In 2012 Dolores Huerta received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

David Leveaux’s new production marks the 50th anniversary of the play that made a young Tom Stoppard’s name overnight. Description: Two Must See Films are Coming Soon to the most Fabulous Frida Cinema, in Santa Ana! Hypnotic…  Science Fiction…  Allegorical tale…  One of the best drama films of the latter half of the 20th century… 1979’s Stalker is all that and more, relating the tale of 3 men traversing a forbidden post-apocalyptic “Zone”  to find a magical room which has the power to make wishes come true. Stalker is a metaphysical journey through a sentient heart of darkness, with unforgettable images and emotional intensity—a rarely screened masterpiece which will grace the Frida’s screen Sept. 25, 26, and 30th.  On the other side of the spectrum is the deliciously horrible 2003 film THE ROOM, sometimes called the “Citizen Kane of bad movies.”  What THE ROOM is about is not nearly as important as the glee you’ll experience watching the most awesomely awful acting, writing, and all around ludicrous film-making since Ed Wood. This film sells out each and every time the Frida screens it, this time on September 29th!

Description: TWO TRAINS RUNNIN’—The Search for Blues Giants Son House and Skip James. Two Trains Runnin’ is a feature-length documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Pollard, narrated by Common, and featuring the music of Gary Clark Jr. The film pays tribute to a pioneering generation of musicians and cuts to the heart of our present moment, offering a crucial vantage from which to view the evolving dynamics of race in America.  In June of 1964 hundreds of college students, eager to join the civil rights movement, traveled to Mississippi, starting what would be known as Freedom Summer. That same month, two groups of young men--made up of musicians, college students and record collectors--also traveled to Mississippi. Though neither group was aware of the other, each had come on the same errand: to find an old blues singer and coax him out of retirement. Thirty years before, Son House and Skip James had recorded some of the most memorable music of their era, but now they seemed lost to time. Finding them would not be easy. There were few clues to their whereabouts. It was not even known for certain if they were still alive. And Mississippi, that summer, was a tense and violent place. With hundreds on their way to teach in freedom schools and work on voter registration, the Ku Klux Klan and police force of many towns vowed that Freedom Summer would not succeed. Churches were bombed, shotguns blasted into cars and homes. It was easy for the young men looking for Son House and Skip James to be mistaken as activists. Finally, on June 21, 1964, these two campaigns collided in memorable and tragic fashion. In telling this remarkable story, Two Trains Runnin' revisits an important moment when America's cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed. The movie is all the more pointed and relevant today, in an era of renewed attention on police brutality and voting rights.

Description: A Special Invitation for KPFK Film Club Members to ATTEND A Special Event!!!  In HORSEMEN OF THE TRUMPOCALYPSE: A Field Guide to the Most Dangerous People in America (on sale August 29, 2017), John Nichols, veteran political correspondent at The Nation, examines the troubled past, unsettling back stories and unconscionable connections of Trump’s Cabinet members, White House aides and judicial and regulatory appointees. If concerned citizens are going to navigate the next four years and have the tools to fight back, they need to know who will be handling the levers of power, and how to challenge their excesses. HORSEMEN OF THE TRUMPOCALYPSE is not just a laundry list of the bold faced names we constantly hear about, but an expose of all the power players, including those who operate below the headlines. Sticking to the hard facts and unafraid to dig deep into the histories and ideologies of the people who make up Trump’s inner circle, Nichols delivers a clear-eyed and complete guide to who these people really are. John Nichols is the national affairs writer for The Nation magazine and a contributing writer for The Progressive and In These Times. He is also the associate editor of the Capital Times, the daily newspaper in Madison, Wisconsin, and a cofounder of the media-reform group Free Press. A frequent commentator on American politics and media, he has appeared often on MSNBC, NPR, BBC and regularly lectures at major universities on presidential administrations and executive power. Description: Most people remember Jack London as the author of “Call of the Wild” but more than that he is the template for the "modern hero” who rebels against society and changes it for the better. During his lifetime London rose from poverty to become the highest paid, most controversial and most popular writer in the world. London had to drop out of school in the eighth grade to help support his family. Unwilling to play the role of the work-beast society had cast him in, he rebelled and became an outlaw. Realizing that the life of an outlaw had its own type of conformity with its bleak aspect of prison and quick death, he confronted the hypocrisy of the society in which he lived and changed his behavior through self-education. Eventually, by becoming a writer, he became a true modern hero, effecting change not only in his own circumstances but in literature and society as well. London’s character, love life, writings and personal philosophy are elucidated through interviews with leading scholars, his own photographs, literary works, and vintage film clips. From the Klondike to the Far East to the South Seas, his adventures, romances and political views made headlines worldwide. A fabulous Laemmle Culture Vulture Presentation!!!

Description: Recorded Live from London’s THE ROYAL BALLET, featuring the most fabulous music of Mendelssohn, Frank, AND Liszt!! Frederick Ashton was Founder Choreographer of The Royal Ballet. His works define the English style of ballet – characterized most notably by precise, fleet footwork, sensuous épaulement (the way the shoulders are held) and gorgeous line of delicate simplicity. His many works for the Company are arguably its greatest legacy. The Royal Ballet celebrates this heritage through a mixed programme of three of Ashton’s most loved – and most characteristic – works. The Dream (1964) is an enchanting adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to music by Mendelssohn.Symphonic Variations (1946) is Ashton’s first masterpiece, and a breathtaking, abstract work on the beauty of pure movement.Marguerite and Armand (1963), inspired by the celebrated dance partnership between Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, is a tragic love story of great lyric beauty: in the last stages of her fatal illness, the Lady of the Camellias relives some incidents of her tragic life. A fabulous Laemmle Culture Vulture Presentation!!!!

Description: Verdi’s fabulous opera in two acts, from the world famous From Opéra de Paris, is coming to a Laemmle Theater near you! “Before the carnival is over, all Rome will love my Cinderella…” Thus spoke Rossini in 1817, in the aftermath of the disastrous opening night, firmly convinced that his pumpkin would be transformed into a sumptuous carriage. The future was to prove him right. However, in moving from Perrault’s tale to the opera, the humble servant who dreams of going to the ball has lost all her magical attributes: here there is no fairy godmother to transform mice into horses, rats into coachmen and lizards into footmen with a wave of her wand. And it is not a fur slipper but a bracelet that the beauty leaves behind for her prince, quite deliberately, challenging him to find her again. The Enlightenment had lit its fires throughout Europe and La Cenerentola focused on the burning issues of the day, confronting social divisions to reveal the crinoline beneath the rags.

Description: George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of ‘Emeralds’, while the fire of ‘Rubies’ comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in ‘Diamonds’. Jewels is a masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet and indeed of The Royal Ballet itself: the virtuoso choreography of Balanchine, the intensity of the soloists and the precision of the entire Company. George Balanchine’s glittering ballet Jewels was inspired by the beauty of the gem stones he saw in the New York store of jewellers Van Cleef & Arpels. He went on to make history with this, the first abstract three-act ballet, first performed in 1967 by New York City Ballet.  Each section salutes a different era in classical ballet’s history as well as a distinct period in Balanchine’s own life.

Description:VARIETE, the 1925 German Silent Classic that had the whole world talking back in 1925, will be screening  on 8/12 at 2PM at the most wondrous Cinefamily Theater on Fairfax!!!  And to top it off, the amazing Cliff Retallick will provide live musical accompaniment!!! (review and interview with Mr. Retallick here: https://www.facebook.com/1718261665115719/photos/a.1718312808443938.1073741828.1718261665115719/1928879404053943/?type=3&theater) Set in the wild and extravagant world of carnivals, circuses and variety performances, VARIETE had cinematography with flair and a camera that flipped and spun with the acrobats.  It was also a tale of infidelity, jealousy and murder, all shown in detail.  Adapted from a 1921 novel by Felix Hollaender, Variete is a gem extracted from the golden age of twenties German silent film. The film follows a trapeze artist – accompanied by “unleashed” acrobatic camera work to match. Presented in a new DCP restoration! “This is a production which not only shows the way in which a story should be unfurled, but impresses one with the magic of the camera in picturing effects, such as the torrent of thoughts rushing through a maddened mind, and the views of the audience from the eyes of a hurtling trapeze performer.” – Mordaunt Hall, The New York Times.

Frida Cinema, 305 E 4th St, Santa Ana, CA 92701
Frida’s website: http://thefridacinema.org/

Description: Alejandro Jodorowsky, The Venerated Cult Cinema Master, at the Fabulous FRIDA CINEMA. There was once a time (1970’s) when you might saddle up to the counter of your small and struggling video store and plead with the bearded guy behind the counter to rent you his personal (probably bootleg) copy of El Topo.  It wasn’t like you hadn’t stood in line, more than once, for the midnight screening at the nearest art house cinema.  But the idea of watching this cult classic on your own TV, pausing and rewinding your way through the movie, seemed so….well, maybe spiritual isn’t quite the right word, but….Fast forward.  Now the REAL TREAT is sitting in the dark with like-minded Cinefiles and watching Jodorowsky’s cult masterpieces on the big screen,  where they truly belong. Well, again, the amazing Frida Cinema’s got you covered, screening Jodorowsky’s latest ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth, ENDLESS POETRY,  as well as a number of his classics, including EL TOPO (1970), THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973), and SANTA SANGRE (1990.)  You won’t want to miss them:

ENDLESS POETRY—From the mind of visionary artist and filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky comes his latest sublime work of autobiography filtered through symbolism, Poesia sin fin (Endless Poetry). Endless Poetry details Jodorowsky’s life from the time he left the Chilean coastal town of Tocopilla for Santiago at the age of nine, through his decision to move to France when he was in his 20s. The younger Alejandro is played by The Dance of Reality (Jodorowsky’s previous film) star Jeremias Herskovitz; Adan Jodorowsky, the director’s youngest son, who also composed the film’s score, plays the more mature Alejandro. Against the wishes of his authoritarian father (played by Brontis Jodorowsky, Alejandro’s oldest son) the 20-year-old protagonist leaves home to pursue his dream of becoming a poet, and is introduced to the bohemian and artistic inner circle of Santiago. He meets Enrique Lihn (Leandro Taub) and Stella Diaz (Pamela Flores), two unknown poets who would become driving forces of twentieth century Hispanic literature. Told through Jodorowsky’s unique surreal and psychedelic visual language, Endless Poetry is an ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth as a universal force capable of changing one’s life forever.
“The most accessible movie Jodorowsky has ever made, and it may also be his best. It’s Felliniesque and moving . . . Yet more than any previous Jodorowsky opus, it’s also a work of disciplined and touching emotional resonance.” – Variety

El Topo—The genre of the Psychedelic Western launched in the late ’60s, but its true form manifested itself in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s dreamlike, bizarre, and unforgettable epic El Topo. A story about a mysterious gunfighter clad in black, this film pairs the mysticism of Eastern religions with extreme violence, enough to make Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch seem like a cartoon.
Originally released in 1970, El Topo quickly caught the imagination of movie audiences, becoming a landmark in independent film-making. The early screenings at New York’s Elgin Theater sparked the Midnight Movie phenomena, catalyzed by an endorsement from John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Classic Americana and avant-garde European sensibilities collide with Zen Buddhism and the Bible as master gunfighter and mystic El Topo (played by Jodorowsky himself) tries to defeat four sharp-shooting rivals on a bizarre path to allegorical self-awareness and resurrection. As it seeks an alternative to the Hollywood mainstream,El Topo is also the most controversial quasi-Western head trip ever made!

The Holy Mountain—Need a religious experience? How about an acid trip? Why not both? The scandal of the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, Alejandro Jodorowsy’s seminal hallucinogenic work The Holy Mountain takes every religion, throws them in a mixer, and makes a hell of a cocktail.  Focused on a thief/Christ-like drifter, the narrative hopscotches around to different drug-induced reenactments of history, including the conquest of Mexico fought between iguanas and frogs—and that’s just the beginning. From there he meets an alchemist (played by Jodorowsky himself), who takes him and seven figures to the titular Holy Mountain for the craziest enlightenment of all time. Equally appalling and hilarious, The Holy Mountain is one of the greatest cult classics of the 1970s.

SANTA SANGRE—Director Alejandro Jodorowsky is at his surreal best with this off-the-wall shocker from the late ’80s.  A traumatized young boy spends his life in a mental institution, only to rejoins his mother, former leader of the heretical Santa Sangre (“Holy Blood”) church, whose arms were cut off by his philandering circus-performer father. As all mother-son relationships in horror go, mother knows best…, and with her son by her side, she sets out an exacting revenge against all who have wronged her, and who pose a threat to her renewed family unit.
Granted an NC-17 upon release, Santa Sangre shocked audiences and remains a gem of revenge horror which Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called “a mixture of blood poetry and gobbledygook that keeps springing astonishingly to life.”

On July 21st  the amazing Art Theater in Long Beach begins its screening of DUNKIRK, the World War II thriller starring Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance. In May 1940, Germany advanced into France, trapping Allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Acclaimed auteur Christopher Nolan (INSOMNIA, THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY, INTERSTELLER) directs, telling this thrilling story from three perspectives–the land, sea and air–with filming taking place on location in Dunkirk, France.  More than 6,000 extras were employed, as well as boats that had participated in the real Dunkirk evacuation and genuine era-appropriate planes for aerial sequences. The beautifully renovated Art Theater in Long Beach is the perfect place to see this cinematic event.

Description: The Cinefamily Proudly Presents Eric Rohmer’s Fascinating SIX MORAL TALES. Based on a collection of short stories that Rohmer had written in his twenties, the SIX MORAL TALES vaulted Rohmer to international fame and commercial success! Each of the Tales concerns a man’s fascination with a woman as a digression in the man’s life; he eventually returns,  with little or no regret, to life with another woman, the man’s true partner.  In each, the protagonist’s version of the story is different from the audience’s version, with supporting players in one version the leads in the other. The French word "moraliste" does not translate to the English word "moral" and has more to do with what someone thinks and feels. Thus the films can be seen as investigations about what characters think about their behavior rather than about the behavior itself.  Rohmer has said that he wanted to portray in film what seemed most alien to the medium, to express feelings buried deep in our consciousness.  The SIX MORAL TALES unleashed onto the film world a new voice—sexy, philosophical, modern, daring, nonjudgmental, and liberating. And the results helped establish Rohmer as one of the most acclaimed directors of the famous French New Wave. Six Titles on Five Screening Dates:
The Bakery Girl of Monceau & Suzanne’s Career--In the first of Rohmer’s “Moral Tales,” a law student (Barbet Schroeder) with a roving eye and a large appetite stuffs himself full of sugar cookies and pastries daily in order to garner the attentions of the pretty brunette who works in a quaint Paris bakery. In Suzanne’s Career, Bertrand bides his time in a casually hostile and envious friendship with college chum Guillaume. But when ladies’ man Guillaume seems to be making a play for the spirited, independent Suzanne, Bertrand watches bitterly with disapproval and jealousy.
My Night at Maud’s-- In the brilliantly accomplished centerpiece of Rohmer’s “Moral Tales” series, Jean-Louis Trintignant plays Jean-Louis, a pious Catholic engineer who unwittingly spends the night at the apartment of the bold, brunette divorcée Maud, where his rigid ethical standards are challenged.  Oscar nominated and Cannes Award Winner.
La Collectionneuse- -In Rohmer’s first color film, a bombastic, womanizing art dealer and his painter friend go to a seventeenth-century villa on the Riviera for a relaxing summer getaway. But their idyll is disturbed by the presence of the bohemian Haydée, accused of being a “collector” of men.
Claire's Knee--“Why would I tie myself to one woman if I were interested in others?” says Jerôme, even as he plans on marrying a diplomat’s daughter by summer’s end. Before then, Jerôme spends his July at a lakeside boardinghouse nursing crushes on the sixteen-year-old Laura and her blonde stepsister, Claire.
Love in the Afternoon--In the luminous final chapter to Rohmer’s “Moral Tales,” the bourgeois business executive Frédéric, though happily married to an adoring wife, cannot banish from his mind the multitude of attractive Parisian women who pass him every day. Then arrives Chloé, an audacious, unencumbered old flame.

Description: Silent film fans, the time has come to rejoice! Now on the second Saturday of every month, get ready to receive The Silent Treatment:  Cinefamily’s ongoing series of artfully chosen feature films from all corners of the pre-sound era — choice picks that are rarely screened theatrically, or are not available on DVD!  On July 8th at 2PM the Cinefamily screens EVE’S LEAVES with live accompaniment by Cliff Retallick!!! Based on the play by Harry Chapman Ford and directed by Paul Sloane, the film follows a sea captain who forces his daughter Eve (Leatrice Joy) to masquerade as a boy. Eve responds by provoking widespread mischief aboard her father’s tramp freighter (ironically named “The Garden of Eden”). While the plot is laden with melodrama, it is comedy that forms the true heart of this movie.  William Boyd, who would later achieve greater fame as cowboy hero Hopalong Cassidy, is commendable as the object of Eve’s desire; but while their combined screen chemistry is palpable (as witnessed in the truly memorable “apple-kissing” scene), it is Joy’s ebullient performance that ultimately steals the show.

Now, the National Paris Opera Ballet is staging Brown's seminal 1979 work Glacial Decoy, with costumes and projected slides by the similarly risk-taking artist Robert Rauschenberg, performed by a new generation of dancers. Culminating in the staging of Glacial Decoy, the film is a privileged look at the process of staging a major dance piece and a testament to the value of teaching and studying art. Who forces Leonora, and Alvaro as the murderer of her father, to enter the hermitage of a monastery – and confronts them there, in a mighty showdown, with the brother who is full of hatred and cannot forgive? Is it a declaration of war against God’s promise of redemption? The heavenly cantilena of a solo violin rises at the end of the opera – in the face of the death of the hero’s lover and brother. Those who withdraw into the consoling twilight of a divine peace here are only trying to deny one thing: the force of destiny.

DESCRIPTION: When he had Clay Shaw arrested for conspiracy to murder President Kennedy, New Orlean's District Attorney Jim Garrison announced that he would prove in court that the CIA was behind the assassination, just as they had arranged the murders of democratically elected presidents in Iran and Guatemala. Garrison called it a "no risk" operation aided by some in the media.
Using CIA documents, 'The American Media & The Second Assassination of President John F. Kennedy' attempts to prove that Garrison was right. Filmmaker John Barbour posits that the CIA infiltrated the media with 'Project Mockingbird' to create what we now call fake news to further their bellicose objectives in Cuba and Vietnam, objectives Kennedy was resisting.
Barbour goes on to show how subsequent propaganda overwhelmed Americans and drowned the truth of Garrison's case. He also tells the story of his own ordeals struggling to get a media platform for Mr. Garrison to tell his story. The film is based upon three-and-a-half hours of interviews that Garrison granted Barbour and is a sequel to Barbour's 1992 film 'The JFK Assassination: The Jim Garrison Tapes,' which won the Best Documentary award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

DESCRIPTION: In Maura Axelrod's iconoclastic documentary, we meet the art world’s enfant terrible Maurizio Cattelan, one of the most successful—and controversial—artists of our time. His work is designed to offend and insult—and yet, the more he abuses people, it seems the more popular he becomes according to one observer. The film documents Maurizio from his early days in poverty to his recent career-capping retrospective at the Guggenheim, with a few twists along the way. Axelrod's playful profile leaves no stone unturned in trying to figure out: Who is Maurizio Cattelan?

DER ROSENKAVALIER--The Magnificnet Music of Richard Strauss and a Farewell Performance by the Legendary Renée Fleming!
May 13th and 17th 2017 at the Burbank and Universal Citywalk AMC Theaters.
Info from Fathom Events here: http://www.fathomevents.com/events/der-rosenkavalier
DESCRIPTION: Der Rosenkavalier--The magnificent music of Richard Strauss and a Farewell Performance by the Legendary Renée Fleming! Fathom Events and The MET, Live in HD, present Renée Fleming as she retires one of her best signature roles— Strauss’s Marschallin, an attractive, worldly-wise princess in 18th-century Vienna. Strauss’s most popular opera concerns a wise woman of the world who is involved with a much younger lover, and who ultimately gives him up to a pretty young heiress. The story deftly combines comedy, dreamy nostalgic fantasy, genuine human drama, and light but striking touches of philosophy and social commentary. And the magnificent score combines the refinement of Mozart with the epic grandeur of Wagner. Fleming stars opposite Elīna Garanča in her first North American performances as Octavian, the impulsive young title character. The cast also includes Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs, Erin Morley as Sophie, Marcus Brück in his Met debut as Faninal, and Matthew Polenzani as the Italian Singer. Conducted by Sebastian Weigle and directed by Robert Carsen, who most recent Met production was the hit 2013 staging of Falstaff, Der Rosenkavalier is a co-production with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Teatro Regio di Torino. Go behind the scenes with the Met's stars! During intermission, interviews with cast, crew, and production teams give a revealing look at what goes into the staging of an opera.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
May 8th at 7:30 PM and May 9th at 1 PM
Screening at the  Laemmle Claremont 5,  Royal, Playhouse 7, and Town Center 5 From the Ballet de l'Opera national de Paris
Laemmle Theaters here:https://www.laemmle.com/films/41924.
DESCRIPTION: Numerous choreographers have delved into Shakespeare to find dramatic material for their ballets, beginning with Jean-Georges Noverre, an ardent defender of the “action ballet” and Marius Petipa, who was the first to use Mendelssohn’s stage music. George Balanchine, who also loved the score, would prove no exception. In 1962 he created his version of Shakespeare’s comedy for New York City Ballet. Faithful to the Bard’s vocabulary whilst adding a subtle touch of pantomime, he portrays a complex love story in two acts and six scenes. Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, become caught up in a domestic quarrel between the king of the elves and the queen of the fairies which results in the intervention of the mischievous Puck and his magic potion along with a troupe of amateur actors. The denouement is celebrated in the form of a grand virtuoso entertainment. One of George Balanchine’s rare narrative ballets, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is entering the Paris Opera Ballet’s repertoire. The sets and costumes for this production have been designed by another magician of the stage, Christian Lacroix.

Info from Laemmle Theaters here: https://www.laemmle.com/films/41539
DESCRIPTION: Puccini’s Madama Butterfly is one of the most popular of all operas, with ravishing music and a heartbreaking story of a loving geisha deserted by a callous American husband. Much loved soprano Ermonela Jaho sings the title role for the first time at Covent Garden, in Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier‘s stunningly beautiful production. The exotic imagery of the Nagasaki setting is drawn from 19th-century Western artists’ romanticized views of Japan. Puccini’s music brings alive the birdsong of the morning, the ritual of a wedding and the seduction by naval officer B.F. Pinkerton (sung by exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente) of his young, innocent bride. Well known moments include the impassioned aria ‘Un bel di’ (One fine day) as the abandoned Cio-Cio-San clings vainly to her dreams. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, acclaimed for his interpretations of Italian opera, conducts this intense and gripping journey from light and excitement to darkness and self-sacrifice. Starring: Ermonela Jaho, Marcelo Puente, Scott Hendricks, Elizabeth DeShong.

David Lynch is a lifelong artist whose fixation on the concept of moving, audible paintings begat arguable cinematic masterstrokes like Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, films that explore, challenge, subvert (and yet, celebrate), the inherent darkness within American normalcy. Lynch himself describes a boyhood of cherry tree-lined streets, ”But on the cherry tree, there’s this pitch oozing out – some black some yellow, and millions of red ants crawling all over. I discovered that if one looks a little closer at this beautiful world, there’s always red ants underneath.”
